Books Aloud!: The Free Library of Philadelphia's Books Aloud! is an outreach program for parents of preschool children, day care providers and preschool teachers, providing them with the skills to read aloud successfully with young children.

Being read aloud to is the single most important factor in determining a young child’s school success and lifelong literacy. Just as a child develops language skills long before being able to speak, literacy skills are developed long before being able to read.

Attend a Workshop
From October through June, Books Aloud! presents themed workshops each month at twelve library locations throughout the city. Previous workshop themes have included “Count on Books: Preschool Math,” “Lullabies to Literacy,” and "Mother Goose: First Step in Literacy." Free books and other materials based on the theme are given away to each workshop participant. The materials will show parents and caregivers ways to expand the theme through additional activities. Childcare providers will get a certificate crediting them with one hour of training.
